“Sweet basil has a strong aniseed, minty smell with a sweet peppery taste. A very common ingredient in Mediterranean cooking, basil beautifully complements tomato and are also delicious eaten as pesto,” Hamilton says.

Basil also goes well with fruits such as watermelon, mango and lemon and can add sweetness to a salad, especially with balsamic vinegar.

“Basil has antibacterial properties,” Hamilton says, “and is commonly used for indigestion, flatulence and loss of appetite.”
