A warming spice, cinnamon has a sweet, spicy taste. “The dried bark is often used together with ginger in baked goods and is particularly good with apple or used in a chai tea blend,” Hamilton says.
The key is to try to buy Ceylon cinnamon in stick form or ground, as this is true cinnamon, which is less processed and better for you. Cinnamon from the supermarket is often Cassia cinnamon, which tastes similar but might not be beneficial for health. Buy and use cinnamon in small quantities, particularly because freshness and flavour can disappear quickly. “Cinnamon has antibacterial and fungicidal properties,” Hamilton says. “It is carminative and useful for treating indigestion and loss of appetite.”
