Ginger has a warm, sweet, spicy flavour that makes it a lovely addition to both sweet and savoury foods. “In cooking, ginger root can be used fresh or in dried powdered form,” Hamilton says. “It is a common ingredient in curry pastes and, of course, good old lemon and fresh ginger tea is always a hit when we’re feeling poorly.”
Ginger is also a great sweet spice, found in things such as carrot cake and pumpkin pie, not to mention the one to which it gives its name: gingerbread.
“Ginger is one of the more researched plants in terms of medicinal benefits and its list of properties is long,” Hamilton says. “It is commonly used as a treatment for nausea and vomiting and has been clinically proven to reduce the duration and severity of both. It can also ease indigestion.”
